France Makes Contraception And Abortion Free

As of April 1st, women in France do not need to pay for an abortion because the government now covers 100% of the costs. If this news is not good enough for pro-choice advocates, they’ll be happy to know that France has also made birth control free as well. That’s right, as of April 1st, contraception as well as abortion are completely free in France! Under this new bill, women are now entirely reimbursed by the government for the cost of their abortion and girls between the ages of 15 and 18 are also guaranteed free birth control. According to the article I read, “Since increasing access to birth control has consistently shown to reduce abortion rates, French authorities are expecting to see a drop the amount of women requiring abortions now that the law is effective.”

This is the best news I have read in a long time. In my opinion, this new bill will do nothing but good for the people in France, especially the youth who are just starting to become sexually active. I’ve been an advocate for universal health care for as long as I can remember and in my opinion, this is the the next best thing. I just wish America would follow suit and implement these changes to our laws as well. But that’s just wishful thinking at this point, seeing as how abortion is not even legal. Legalizing abortion nationwide is one thing, but making it free? That’s almost too good to be true! I’m excited to see how this law will effect the statistics in France. Less unplanned pregnancies? Less abortions due to free contraceptives? We won’t truly know if this bill was a good idea until the numbers are released in the months to come, but I firmly believe that this is a great thing. This is a milestone in human history and I hope more countries around the world will follow this example.

Good News! France is predominately Roman Catholic. The power of the state must override the power church. It just goes to show that good sound logic and progressive religious leaders can meet on sensible terms.
