Body Image

Why do women suffer from eating disorders? The mentality of women today is to be thin and to look a certain way. Society continues to send the message to young women that to be happy and successful one must be thin, which causes them to starve and/or binge and purge themselves in an attempt to gain what the media considers an ideal figure. The media has been altering the way women view themselves and each other. Some of these ways are how woman today view their own body image, what stereotypes the media puts on women, and how these things affect women’s health. Body image is the way one sees their own body, but not in the mirror but in their own mind’s perception of themselves which usually a negative self image.  Young women are constantly under the impression that they have to fit the current definition of beauty in order to fit in with society so men can recognize them. Media is constantly trying to alter the way we perceive our own bodies to be, and what we accept as the norm for a perfect body. Everywhere you turn society is being presented with images of perfection, beauty, or sexuality, all the actresses, and models are portrayed really thin in media . Some of these images represent unrealistic or unreachable expectations and can be truly harmful. Young women are influenced by the images that they see in commercials, billboards, internet sites, and movies. These images serve to harm a woman’s self confidence and also are affecting their overall health. Many young women are dieting to be thinner to become accepted in to the cult of thinness and to be wanted with people. There are many challenges with women wanting to be a certain size they could be physically and mentally effected. women who are so obsessed  with their weight tend to develop eating disorders. Two main types of eating disorder are: bulimia and anorexia nervousa. Bulimia nervosa, a destructive pattern of excessive overeating followed by vomiting or other ” purging ” behaviors to control their weight.  Anorexia nervosa, a dangerous condition in which one eats so little or literally starve themselves to death because of the fear that they might gain weight. they are both deadly and harmful to the body which can cause some complications such as: bone weakening, severe dehydration, tooth decay, low potassium in blood and decrease in white blood cells. It is sad that even young girls of ages 4 and 5 think about their weight. One time my friend and her 5 yrs old daughter came over my house, I offered the little girl some juice and cake she refused to take them so I asked why, she said ” I don’t want to eat because I want to fit in the dress I’m wearing for a wedding tomorrow”. I  was shocked that 5 yr old thinks like that. Unfortunately the media did not only affect young women and teenagers but also children. I think the media and society should have no influence on what a person looks like, or how they present themselves. We should set good role models for the young generations.  People need to believe in themselves, have confidence in themselves and be who they want to be, not who the media or society wants them to be. With confidence, it will help their self-esteem and make them more pleasant to be around.
