A few weeks ago, Beyoncé released a song called “Bow Down” and the Internet went crazy. Being that she is possibly the biggest star on Earth, her song received tons of criticism because of its chorus stating “bow down b*tches”. Over the years Beyoncé has painted herself as the pinnacle for women’s independence and empowerment. Her critics have gone as far as to call her a hypocrite because of the songs braggadocios lyrics….
“I took some time to live my life
But don’t think I’m just his little wife
Don’t get it twisted, get it twisted
This my sh*t, bow down b*tches”
Is it because she uses the word “b*tches” or is it because we assume she’s telling her counterparts to bow down? In my opinion, her song is a reflection of her life. She a woman that basically has it all. She has everything that most women strive for. She’s married, has a kid, a huge empire, lots of talent, and tons of money. Her song is feminist in its own right. The over the top references to her success aren’t that different from most of today’s rap songs. So what she uses the dreaded b-word, in the context of the song, it stands in the place of an exclamation point
I’m on twitter a lot, and I see tweets criticizing every little thing that Beyoncé does. Whether it’s about her child, her marriage, the outfit she wore, and the list goes on. It’s about time she stood up and “beat her chest”. She’s the greatest entertainer of our generation and she should be able to claim it as such.
