It’s a big day…

This week, the supreme court is hearing two cases in the appeals to state and federal laws restricting same-sex marriage. The first is being heard today, an appeal of California’s ban on same sex marriage, which is widely known as Proposition 8. After these hearings, it is possible that the laws will state same-sex marriage as a fundamental right under the constitution, but it is also possible that nothing will change and the traditional marriage laws will still stand.

In a society that has seem to evolve and change so much in the past few decades, it is difficult to understand why marriage equality is still even an issue. The way the laws are written, excluding same-sex marriage from being recognized legally, it just opens the doors for discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender individuals. If the law is going to treat LGBT individuals differently, than how can officials be surprised when the law abiding citizens do the same?

Even just the situation that has recently come to light with the Boy Scouts. Honestly, I couldn’t even believe that that was true, not allowing any openly homosexual individuals from holding membership. By not accepting these young boys/men, they are basically saying there is something wrong with you and we don’t want you to be included. For a young homosexual child, who is probably conflicted in his own mind about what is “wrong” with him and why he is not “normal”, I can’t imagine how truly awful that is. Not only is it terrible for the homosexuals being excluded, but it is also terrible for those hearing the message that it is okay to treat homosexuals differently and exclude them if you feel like it because they are different. Many children are suffering at the hands of bully’s all over the country for many different reasons and I think all of American’s can agree that it’s a terrible thing that needs to stop. The problem is, it is America’s people and laws that are setting the example for these kids and until a change takes place with those who lead, there will be a never ending cycle for those who follow.

I completely agree with you on this! Honestly I find it very disheartening to hear that young boys/men are not being allowed to have membership in a great organization such as Boy Scouts. Personally I like the org because of their good morale and the values they stand for, BUT discriminating against these boys is just wrong. You’re right, not allowing them to partake is just a means to make them feel as if something is wrong with them. What a way to kill a kid’s self esteem-as if they probably aren’t already going through a rough time with peers or family. We need to teach our children that not everyone likes and loves the same, but that this is okay. Once parents are able to raise their children without being closed minded (when pigs fly), then people would eventually be able to accept one another for their sexuality, and same sex marriages would not have to be an issue.

I completely agree with the both of you. I took it upon myself to check the boy scouts of america’s website to locate their mission statement. According to the website, “The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.” The scout’s oath is “On my honor I will do my best, To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” If the part of helping people at all times is one of their responsibilities, they have already failed. How are they helping others at all times when they exclude someone for their sexual orientation. By doing this, they might as well exclude people of different race, religion, etc. The US needs to accept the fact that the world is changing. What used to be the norm in the past (similar religions, black and whites sitting side by side rather than separated, etc) is now being revised. We need to accept the change and deal with our real problems such hunger, world peace, national dept, etc. rather than worry about what is going on behind closed doors of consenting adults. Heterosexuals shouldn’t have all of the fun that marriage has to offer such as sleeping with the same person for the rest our lives, incurring each other’s debt, filing joint tax returns and losing our deductions as a single person, and dealing with the possibility of divorce which may result in losing everything to your significant other, etc. Marriage isn’t all it’s cracked up to be so if people want to get married for love and risk all of the things mentioned above, I say let them.
