Quote of the Day: Your uterus is a “graveyard for lots and lots of little babies”

birth control kills babies

Nope, they really don’t.

Talk radio host Kevin Swanson has, um, a theory:

I’m beginning to get some evidence from certain doctors and certain scientists that have done research on women’s wombs after they’ve gone through the surgery, and they’ve compared the wombs of women who were on the birth control pill to those who were not on the birth control pill. And they have found that with women who are on the birth control pill, there are these little tiny fetuses, these little babies, that are embedded into the womb. They’re just like dead babies. They’re on the inside of the womb. And these wombs of women who have been on the birth control pill effectively have become graveyards for lots and lots of little babies.

My favorite part is that the hosts go on to say that “people are a little split” on the issue and so they want to speak to “both sides of the table.” Ah, yes. “He said, she said” journalism at its finest. On the one hand, OMG TINY DEAD BABIES. On the other, SCIENCE. Who’s to say??

I found this on Feministing.com, I could not believe my eyes. Society is trying to take control over women bodies by making them scared of  graveyard uterus..Really? Not everyone is ready to have children and are married or not. But to make a woman afraid of protecting herself from an unwanted pregnancy is just wrong. I feel this is just another way for society to take control over a women rights about her body.

Oh, dear, this is absurd. I would really like to know the scientific basis for this notion that wombs are holding “lots and lots of” dead babies without causing sepsis or many other problems I can think of (and I’m not even a medical student).

Unfortunately, I think you are right that these erroneous rumors make women afraid to be on the pill or otherwise protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies. Another, similar misconception that gets on my nerves is the idea that Plan B, otherwise known as the “morning after pill”, is an abortion pill– meaning it kills the fetus inside you if you take it when already pregnant. A flyer was handed to me by the Students for Life in the UC last week that made this claim and it just isn’t true. Plan B is NOT an abortion pill– it prevents pregnancy, but if you are already pregnant it has no effect. The packaging of Plan B makes this clear, as does this site on contraceptive information: http://contraception.about.com/b/2009/02/02/ru486-vs-plan-b.htm

Still, this fear-mongering continues. Getting educated and thinking critically seems to be the only hope for girls and women to learn the truth.

Taking birth control does not cause little tiny fetuses to die and remain in the womb. This is crazy. Taking it just helps to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. I liked how the link said “they would come out when you menstruate since THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT OF MENSTRUATION.”
